Smart Garden

18.10.2016 | Practical projects
The 2014-year group of Industrial Engineering and Management students were given the opportunity to carry out a practical smart garden project for the company VIKING.

Headquartered in Langkampfen, VIKING GmbH is a company that has existed since 1981 and has been part of the STIHL Group since 1992. VIKING is one of the leading manufacturers of high-quality garden tools and is known as a premium brand for lawn mowers. With their six models of iMow robotic mowers, they have already taken the first step towards garden automation, the results of which are also known as smart gardens.

The aim of the practical project was to carry out a technology screening and a benchmarking on VIKING’s smart garden and its already more established smart home. In addition, a smart garden scenario was to be created. As part of the technology screening, the project team worked on a wide range of signal transmission standards, system architectures, and components and checked them for possible use in a smart garden system. The benchmarking aimed at providing an overview of smart home and garden systems. Respective devices and their connectivity and additional functionality were assessed. Based on the pioneering smart home, recommendations could be derived regarding the expectations of added value, stability, and security of user data. At the end of the project, the project team was allowed to capture an idea for the garden of the future in a smart garden scenario. The project was a great success for both the students and the client.
